2009 Heisman Trophy Watch – Week 1

Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow entered the 2009 season as the favorite to win the 2009 Heisman Trophy, and his path to earning the award may have gotten easier when Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford suffered a shoulder injury during the Sooners season opener against BYU.
Tebow’s performance in the Gators season opener against Charleston Southern wasn’t dazzling, but it wasn’t expected to be. Top-ranked Florida led 42-3 at halftime and the Gators backups saw plenty of action.
Bradford entered the season No. 2 on our list of Heisman hopefuls, but his chance of earning back-to-back awards was virtually eliminated when he went down before halftime against the Cougars.
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy will be among the players considered to have a legitimate opportunity to win the Heisman, and his performance in the Longhorns season opening win against Louisiana-Monroe didn’t hurt his cause.
Every week during the college football season we’ll track the 2009 Heisman Trophy candidates. We’ll rank each based on their game day performance and we’ll track their season statistics.
Players making a big leap up in our rankings this week are Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing and California running back Jahvid Best. Penn State quarterback Daryll Clark enters our watch list after his performance against Akron on Saturday.
