Five NFL Coaches on the Hot Seat in 2009

The NFL season is under way and what better time to discuss the head coaches who need to win if they want to keep their jobs by the end of the season.

Here are five NFL coaches on the hot seat who will need their team to deliver this season and what their chances are of being head coaches in 2010.

Brad Childress (Minnesota Vikings)

Though Brad Childress has managed to survive four years with the Minnesota Vikings, this year looks to be all or nothing for the head coach. In 2008, the Vikings were able to sneak into the playoffs by winning three of their last four games.

To help get them to the next level, Childress made a huge push for quarterback Brett Favre and eventually landed the future Hall of Famer. But can an aging quarterback lead the Vikings to the promised land?

We saw how well it worked for Eric Mangini in New York. Expectations are high for the Vikings this season and anything less than a deep playoff run will be land Childress in the unemployment line when the season is over.

20% chance Childress will be the Vikings head coach in 2010

Wade Phillips (Dallas Cowboys)

During the off season, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made the right decision when he decided to ship out problem players like Terrell Owens and Pacman Jones. Though Jones’ actions gave Wade Phillips a second life in Dallas, by no means does this mean he is out of the dog house for this season.

Phillips’ future may hinge on the success or failure of quarterback Tony Romo this season. Romo will need to become the franchise quarterback some people have been counting on.

If the Cowboys are not able to return to the playoffs and find success, Phillips will be looking for a new employer before the Super Bowl is played. The same goes for the former golden boy, offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

40% chance Phillips will be the Cowboys head coach in 2010

Jim Zorn (Washington Redskins)

Though Jim Zorn is only entering his second year as head coach of the Redskins, his career is in question especially after how the Redskins went 2–5 during their last seven games.

The major obstacle in Zorn’s way is the impatience of Redskins’ owner Daniel Snyder.

If Zorn is unable to improve upon the 8–8 record they posted in 2008, Snyder will be looking for his sixth head coach since 2000. If the Redskins own a losing record during their bye week, Snyder may pull the gun early on replacing Zorn.

25% chance Zorn will be the Redskins head coach in 2010

Marvin Lewis (Cincinnati Bengals)

Despite the 4–11–1 record posted last year, Bengals owner Mike Brown has brought back Lewis to coach his seventh season. This was the second consecutive losing season Lewis has had with the Bengals.

While the injury bug played a major role in the team’s demise, Lewis will need to show he can place this team on the right track. Lewis will also be tested by several players who have been labeled with character issues.

If Palmer is able to rebound from his injury, his presence will go along way to solving the offensive woes and make this team relevant again in the NFL playoffs.

75% chance Lewis will be the Bengals head coach in 2010

Jack Del Rio (Jacksonville Jaguars)

It’s hard to believe that Jack Del Rio has lasted seven years in Jacksonville, especially with the inconsistencies the team has shown throughout his tenure.

The Jaguars have followed up playoffs years in 2006 and 2007 with teams that finished below the .500 mark. Del Rio can only fall back on the injury excuse for so long and time is beginning to wear thin in Jacksonville.

If he is unable to right the ship and fix the offense and defense, Del Rio will be looking for employment during the 2009 NFL playoffs.

20% chance Del Rio will be the Jaguars head coach in 2010

Honorable Mention – Tom Cable (Oakland Raiders)

The older he gets, the less Raiders owner Al Davis wants to wait around for a championship. Since Jon Gruden left in 2001, the Raiders owner has gone through five head coaches. If Oakland doesn’t finish with a .500 record, they will be looking for their sixth head coach.
