No Jessica, No T.O., Life Still Sucks For Romo
Published by MoonDog on September 22, 2009
Tony Romo, coming off a career-best game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in which he threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns, stunk so badly in the Cowboys loss to the New York Giants on Sunday night it gave former Dallas wide receiver Terrell Owens reason to Tweet his thoughts.
Not that T.O. or anyone else watching Romo needed to be told how bad he looked, as the 105,121 in attendance and a national television audience saw him complete only 13-of-29 passes for 127 yards and three interceptions.
The three picks led to 20 Giants points that cost Dallas dearly, losing on a last-second field goal 33-31 in a game the Cowboys should have won handily.
During the post game press conference, Romo was the master of the obvious saying that he was responsible for the Cowboys loss to the Giants.
“We can’t win games when I do things like that,” Romo said.
At least Romo took responsibility and didn’t use his high-maintenance former girlfriend Jessica Simpson or even higher-maintenance former teammate T.O. as scapegoats.
“My mistakes,” he said, “really put us in a hole … ” He later added: “I’ll improve. I’ll fix this. We’ll be better tomorrow. I’ll be better.” “I know I made a couple of throws … ” he said, “you look back now and [they] were stupid.”
So while all of that is well and good, the problem still exists. That problem of course is Romo’s propensity to look like Joe Montana one week and Joe The Plumber the next.
Those problems can be isolated even further, with one issue being Romo’s frequent lapses into poor mechanics, which can be addressed through coaching and film study.
The other issue might not be so easily corrected, with the apparent lack of mental toughness he’s displayed ever since taking over the starting role in 2006.
To this day, Romo doesn’t seem to understand what it means to be the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Even if you aren’t a fan of Big D, everyone would agree the job of directing America’s Team is one of the most high profile positions in all of professional sports.
Despite being counseled by former Dallas Hall of Famers Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, the reality of his role as the Cowboys quarterback hasn’t sunk in.
If Romo continues to have games like he did on Sunday against the Giants, the only thing that’s going to sink is the Cowboys season.
If Dallas doesn’t make the playoffs and win their first playoff game since 1996, you can bet Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will stop picking his nose long enough to make major changes.
One of those changes could very well be Romo, who could be changing his address to a residence next door to T.O. in Buffalo.
