Several AL Clubs Interested In Milton Bradley?

I was flipping between the Colts-Dolphins on Monday Night Football and the St. Louis Cardinals game against the Houston Astros last night when I heard some interesting news regarding Chicago Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley.

During the bottom of the third inning, Fox Midwest announcer Dan McLaughlin stated that he had spoken to “several American League clubs” about the possibility of acquiring the volatile Bradley from the Cubs.

As everyone knows, Bradley was told to hit the showers for the remainder of the season by Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry following comments he made in which he said the Cubs were “not a positive environment.”

Hendry met with Bradley in the outfielder’s hotel room on Sunday prior to the Cubs game against the Cardinals to give him the news.

According to McLaughlin, the clubs he spoke to indicated they might be interested in acquiring Bradley, but would expect the Cubs to pick up at least $18-19 million of the $20 million he’s owed over the remaining two years of his contract.

Bradley is in the first year of a three-year, $30 million deal he signed with Chicago earlier this year.

McLaughlin didn’t get into specifics about which clubs he spoke to, and not that I expected him to, but it seems odd that any team would want to acquire Bradley, even under those monetary conditions.

Bradley has been a perpetual problem child throughout his career and has proven to be a lot more trouble than he’s worth – even if it meant the trouble you may have with him basically doesn’t cost you any money.

Of course, any deal involving Bradley probably wouldn’t come to fruition based on the terms McLaughlin laid out. The Cubs may want to dump him, but it’s unlikely they would pay 90-95 percent of Bradley’s remaining salary to get him off their payroll.

Bradley was hitting.257 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 393 at-bats this season. Those are pretty negative numbers for a guy making $10 million.

While he tried to portray himself as a victim being unfairly subjected to a negative environment, the only thing negative in Chicago this season was Milton Bradley, and the Cubs will be better off without him.
