Week 3 of the 2009 NFL season is in the books and there were plenty of Gamers and Lamers to choose from. One thing is for sure about the 2009 season, there are some teams who are going to really struggle this year, especially at the quarterback position.
The Cleveland Browns quarterback controversy is back and it’s going to remain until either Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson step up and show they can lead the team. Otherwise, the Browns may be considering who they should draft with the No. 1 pick in 2010, Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford.
The Oakland Raiders are another team where Al Davis will need to swallow his pride and move forward from the failed experiment of JaMarcus Russell. After three games, he has a 39.8 QB rating while passing for 378 yards with 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions.
Gamer – Cincinnati Bengals
After knocking off the Steelers, the Bengals have a 2-1 record and are already halfway to their win total from 2008. Not only does the team have a decent running game with Cedric Benson, but they have Carson Palmer back at the helm. This was why I said the Bengals were poised to bounce back in 2009.
Lamer – Tampa Bay Buccaneers
So much for improving the offense over last season. I know they played the Giants defense, but to manage only 86 yards of offense, there is no wonder why they were shutout. This is going to be a long season for the Bucs fans if they do not right the ship.
Gamer – Pierre Thomas
Many thought the Saints were going to be the top team in the NFC after the first two games of the season. Where do they stand now that they have their best running back, Pierre Thomas, back on the field? After his 126-yard performance on Sunday, the rest of the league better look out.
Lamer – Pittsburgh Steelers
Everyone was talking about the Arizona Cardinals and how they were going to fall victim to the Super Bowl hangover. For some reason no one thought the Steelers would. The last time the Steelers started the season 1-2 they missed out on the playoffs.
Gamer – New England Patriots
Everyone was counting them out, saying quarterback Tom Brady was too old and the team was going to falter in 2009. That was until they took care of the undefeated Atlanta Falcons. The Patriots will need to continue to improve to keep pace with the upstart New York Jets.
Lamer – Terrell Owens & the Buffalo Bills
Both earned the nomination for the Lamer title this week. Not only did Owens streak of consecutive games with a reception end, the Bills have shown an inability to get Owens the ball. After three games into the season, he only has 5 receptions for 98 yards and 1 touchdown.
Statistical Line of the Week
John Kuhn – Green Bay Packers
Rushing – 1 Carry 1 Yard 1 TD
Receiving – 1 Reception 10 Yards 1 TD
Not bad for the third-year running back who wasn’t drafted out of college.
