Ris Low, the reigning Miss Singapore World, has given up her crown after admitting she stole credit cards to go on a shopping spree for lingerie.
ERM World Marketing, the organizers of the Miss Singapore World pageant, announced that Low has relinquished her title effective immediately.
Low will no longer be able to compete in the Miss World 2009 competition in South Africa after it was discovered she stole seven credit cards to go on a spending spree of totaling $4,500.
Low suffers from bipolar disorder but apparently that wasn’t a root cause of her actions. She was convicted in May and sentenced to two years’ probation.
Claire Lee, the first runner-up in this year’s Miss Singapore World contest, will not represent Singapore at the Miss World finals.
Asked about her contractual obligations, Lee said: “I don’t intend to represent Singapore unless ERM threatens to sue me.”
