2009 SEC Football Power Poll – Week 5

Florida had a bye last week and by default remained at the top of the MoonDog Sports 2009 SEC Football Power Poll.

Florida, the top-ranked team in the nation, will get their first real road test of the season when they square off against LSU on Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers won what became perhaps the best college football game of the season to date when they scored a late touchdown to defeat Georgia in Athens.

Meanwhile the SEC’s second best team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, had no trouble with Kentucky, beating the Wildcats 38-20. Alabama will travel to Oxford on Saturday to face Ole Miss in a game that will give the Rebels an opportunity to prove whether they are contenders or pretenders in the SEC West.

Auburn passed their first road test of the 2009 season with a 26-22 win over Tennessee at Neyland Stadium. Gene Chizik has the Tigers at 5-0 and ranked No. 17 in the nation going into their game against Arkansas on Saturday.

South Carolina improved to 4-1 with a 38-14 non-conference win against South Carolina State. The Gamecocks had trouble against the Bulldogs in the first half, leading by a score of 10-7 heading into the locker room. South Carolina, ranked No. 25 in the nation this week, will face Kentucky on Saturday before they get a major road test against Alabama on October 17.

Ole Miss got back on the winning track with a 23-7 win over Vanderbilt. The Rebels have played three of their four games on the road thus far and of their right remaining games, only have to travel twice more. If Mississippi can get a win over Alabama, they’ll be squarely in the mix for the SEC title.
