As the week comes to an end along with the first round of the MLB playoffs, here are the nominations for Moondog’s Champ & Chump of the Week – Fifteenth Edition.

MLB commission Bud Selig is happy with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees advancing past the divisional round of the playoffs.

But you have to wonder what Selig thinks about three of the four playoff series not going beyond the third game of the series.

Meanwhile NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has to be wondering what has happened to the parity in the NFL.

Through Week 5, 10 of the 32 teams have one win or less.

The experts thought the Boston Red Sox would continue their winning streak over the Los Angeles Angels. There were some who thought the Red Sox would sweep the Angels just like the Yankees did to the Twins.

Instead, the Angels were the ones completing the sweep in grand fashion. With their All-Star closer on the mound, the Red Sox appeared poised to earn a victory and force Game 4. To accomplish this, the Red Sox decided to walk Tori Hunter and pitch to Vladimir Guerrero.

The 36-year-old Guerrero made the Red Sox pay for their undervaluing his ability by nailing a two run single that would win the series. While the Angels will have their hands full with the Yankees, they will not have to endure another off-season about how the Red Sox knocked them out of the playoffs.

Phil Cuzzi1 100x150Chump – Major League Baseball & Umpire Phil Cuzzi

While there were some others who deserved this nomination, it is hard to ignore a potential key play in the 2009 MLB playoffs. Somehow Cuzzi made a crucial mistake in 11th inning of the New York Yankees – Minnesota Twins series.

When the Twins Joe Mauer hit a rocket down the left side, Cuzzi was in perfect position when the ball landed six inches to the right of the foul line in fair territory. Instead of Mauer receiving a ground rule double when the ball bounced out of the stadium, he was sent back to the plate.

While it is debatable if Mauer would have eventually scored, it shows baseball needs to add instant replay to key plays regarding the foul lines during the off-season. Otherwise these major foul ups will continue to happen.
