Top Ten Football Cliches That Need to Be Retired
Published by JM Van Horn on October 14, 2009
While the game of football has produced some memorable moments over the years, it has produced those annoying football clichés offered up by announcers, coaches, and fans.
These are the top ten football clichés that need to go be retired from the announcer’s vocabulary.
It was a moral victory
A moral victory is fine when you are playing football at the lower level, from the Pee Wee Ranks and maybe up through the college ranks. There is no place in the NFL for a moral victory. The players are paid to win and there is no reward for finishing first
He has a motor that won’t quit.
This football cliché has become a favorite in recent weeks when the media has described the Minnesota Vikings’ Jared Allen. And it has grown tiresome. What
This is why they play the game
Without a doubt, this is one of the most annoying ones on the list. Of course it is why they play the game. Otherwise the NFL season would be done in a few hours after they plugged the information into a computer simulation program.
That was a costly turnover
When is a turnover not costly? When it comes to the game of football, a turnover is like shooting yourself in the foot when you are heading into battle.
We have to play the whole 60 minutes
Of course you have to play the whole 60 minutes. Otherwise you would not get paid and fans would not flock to the stadiums and televisions.
The other team wanted it more
In the physical game of football, how does one measure which team wanted it more? The next time an announcer or coach uses this phrase, someone needs to ask them what measurement they used to figure this out.
He gives 110 percent
What does this say about the player who only gives 100 percent for his team? Also it is physically impossible for any player to give more than 100 percent.
He is going to feel that one in the morning
If any of the players who take the field during a NFL game do not feel it the next morning, then they did not do much to earn their paychecks. Even the punters and kickers should feel the toll on their body the next day.
He has a bright future ahead of him.
Whoever utters this football cliché has to be living in a tunnel. Last time I checked, there are about 1,700 players in the NFL. This single fact alone already qualifies them with having a bright future. On top of that, the NFL has a minimum salary just over $300,000. And that is not counting the rest of the perks they receive.
We’re going to play this one game at a time
It would be truly amazing to watch a NFL team play two games at a time. If the NFL is ever hurting for money in the future, they might try this tactic with having a team play two games at once. Until then, coaches and players do not have a choice; they must play each game one at a time.

Nice list. I would add “skill players”. Is a good center or left tackle without skills? I would say a good center has more skills than a wide receiver. Why not use the correct name and call them glamour players?
