Therese Van Belle Named Miss Homeless Person
Published by MoonDog on October 15, 2009
Therese Van Belle, pictured center, a homeless 58-year-old Brussels woman, has won a year’s free accommodations in her native Belgium after being named Miss Homeless.
The event offered homeless women the chance to win a rent-free apartment for a year.
Ten homeless women battled it out in the final competition over the weekend. Contestants had to make it through all five parts of the pageant, including a talk where judges assessed their “will to get themselves out of a difficult situation.”
Contest organizer Aline Duportail told how she hoped the competition would draw attention to the plight of the homeless.
Duportail told the Austrian Times: “It was about the contestants’ inner strength and determination to get themselves out of their old life and on a new path.”
However women’s rights groups have slammed the contest, branding it “absolutely pathetic”.
Activist Jacqueline Aubenas said: “I am outraged. These girls turned into puppets parodying their own life. Absolutely pathetic.”
