New Political Action Committee Undertakes Elimination Of The BCS
Published by MoonDog on October 20, 2009
PlayOff PAC, a new political action committee (PAC) formed by a group of fans, has taken aim at the Bowl Championship Series in an effort to eliminate the system used to crown a national champion in college football.
According to a report on Politico.com, Matthew Sanderson, a former campaign finance counsel for Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign, is one of six co-founders who started the committee.
The newly formed PAC has received initial support from several members of the U.S. Congress that have been outspoken in their opposition to the BCS.
Representative Joe Barton (R-TX) and Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) have been two of the BCS’ biggest critics. Earlier this year, Barton introduced a bill that would force college football to do away with the BCS.
On July 7, Hatch told members of the committee on antitrust oversight that a Justice Department investigation into the BCS is warranted. Appearing as a guest on the Tony Barnhart Show on September 8, Hatch said the BCS “literally violates antitrust laws.”

“Beat the BCS. Save College Football” is the new slogan for Playoff PAC, and Barton has been quick to embrace the group’s efforts.
“The entire BCS system is a farce. It arbitrarily selects champions and reduces competition between conferences,” said Barton in a statement.
“College football’s post-season championship should be decided on the field, and that’s why a playoff system is needed. I look forward to working with Playoff PAC in reforming college football.”
Much of the recent criticism directed towards the BCS came as a result of Utah’s omission from the BCS national championship game this past January.
The Utes completed the regular season undefeated but weren’t given an opportunity to play for the BCS title. Utah was instead invited to play in the Sugar Bowl – one of the five BCS bowl games – where they upset Alabama 31-17.
It should be noted that Sanderson appears to have a personal agenda against BCS – the University of Utah is his Alma mater.
Sanderson’s involvement in the new PAC, coupled with Hatch’s efforts to eliminate the BCS, raises questions into whether a privately funded special interest group will bring political pressure to bear on other members of Congress.
The likelihood of that seems possible, with Sanderson saying on Monday the committee plans on becoming active immediately.
