Moondog’s Champ & Chump of the Week – Sixteenth Edition
Published by JM Van Horn on October 26, 2009
When it comes to the sports world, there is no better time of the year than the end of October. The 2009 World Series is right around the corner and the football seasons for the NFL and the college ranks are getting into the full swing. Here are our nominations for the sixteenth edition of Moondog’s Champ & Chump of the Week.
Champ – Alabama and Terrence Cody
Alabama scored no offensive touchdowns and were out gained by Tennessee 341 yards to 256 yards. Yet they were still able to secure a win over the Volunteers thanks to Terrence Cody who blocked a field goal as time expired on Saturday.
Say what you want out Nick Saban. He is the devil and should not be allowed near our children, but he can coach. When the chips were down the Crimson Tide came out on top and earned their eight win of the year.
Even though they slipped to the second spot behind the Florida Gators, Alabama remained in the hunt for the national title by avoiding the loss.
Chump – MLB Umpires
What else can be said about the major league umpires who have taken center stage during the 2009 baseball playoffs. I have lost count of how many bad calls that have occurred as a result of their mistakes through the division and league series.
Despite the bad calls made, like Phil Cuzzi during the Minnesota – New York series, or umpire Tim McClelland in the Los Angeles – New York series, Bud Selig should not wait until next year to institute instant replay.
With the advance in technology, there is no reason why managers should have two times during a game where they can challenge a certain call on the field. Not only would this satisfy the every day fan, it would eventually win over the long time fans when they see the benefits of it.
