St. Louis Rams Chasing 2008 Detroit Lions 0-16 Record
Published by JM Van Horn on October 31, 2009
While there are plenty of below average NFL teams in 2009, the St. Louis Rams have begun to increase their chances of earning a unique spot in the history of the NFL as they continue to lose. But can the St. Louis Rams catch the 2008 Detroit Lions and let the NFL fans see another 0-16 season?
The Rams have lost 17 games straight have not had the chance to celebrate a win since October 19th when they knocked off the Dallas Cowboys. If they are going to win, there are a few things they will need to improve upon.
The Ram’s defense has allowed 30.1 points per game, which is ranked 30th in the NFL, while allowing 135.9 yards on the ground and 249.6 passing yards for a total of 385.4 yards per game. The Rams are the worst in the NFL when it comes to stopping opponents on third down, allowing them to convert 52% of them.
While the Rams may have one of the worst defenses in the league, the 2008 Lions were ranked dead last in the NFL, allowing 32.3 points per game and allowed their opponents to run for 172.1 yards per game while totaling up 404.4 yards per game.
The real crutch for the Rams is their offense and the inability to score. The Rams are dead last in the NFL with scoring, averaging only 8.6 points per game. They have lost each of their seven games by an average of 21.7 points per games and have broken the 20 point barrier once this season.
By comparison to the 2008 Lions, Detroit was able to average 16.8 points, which was ranked 27th in the NFL, and lost their 16 games by an average of 15.1 points.
Quarterback Marc Bulger has taken a step back after an average season in 2008. So far through seven games, Bulger has completed 57.8% of his passes for 780 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. The lone positive for Bulger in 2009 is that he has only been sacked 9 times, compared to the 37 plus sacks he took in the previous two seasons.
The Rams lone bright spot in 2009 has been running back Steven Jackson who has rushed for 635 yards on 143 carries but has not managed to cross the goal line once this season.
It is doubtful the Rams will match the Lions 0-16 season; too many things have to go wrong for this to happen. They already blew their best chance when they fell to the Washington Redskins in a 9-7 slugfest.
The best chances they have left to earn a victory will be this Sunday against the Lions or when they face the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, or San Francisco 49ers.
Who knows, maybe the Rams can make a run at the 26 consecutive game losing streak set by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
