Moondog’s Champ & Chump of the Week – Seventeenth Edition
Published by JM Van Horn on November 2, 2009
After spending the weekend earning treats or giving tricks and earning an extra hour of sleep for daylight savings, the time has come to release the seventeenth edition of Moondog’s Champ & Chump of the Week.
The New York Yankees are one win away from clinching their 27th World Series thanks to the performance of CC Sabathia pitching on three days of rest. While he will probably end the series without a win, his 3.29 ERA in 13.2 innings of work with 12 strikeouts was a big factor in giving the Yankees bullpen a rest.
From the NFL we saw Brett Favre return to Green Bay and despite the chorus of boo birds, he found a way to win the game and strengthen the Vikings hold on the NFC North.
There was third-year wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. of the Miami Dolphins who finally stepped up and responded to the criticism that has been leveled against him over the past month. Thanks to his two kickoff returns for touchdowns, the Dolphins were able to eventually get the win over the New York Jets.
Champ – Oregon Ducks
We felt it was time to give the Oregon Ducks some love, despite those ugly ass uni’s. Since opening the season with a loss to Boise State, the Ducks have won seven straight and are on the verge of winning the Pac-10 championship and earning the coveted Rose Bowl berth that accompanies it.
The Ducks are ranked eighth in the country with 233.3 rushing yards per game and have averaged 39.5 points per game over their last six. The credit has to go to their head coach, Chip Kelly, who was able to keep the team together after the classless act by running back LeGarrette Blount where he cold cocked an opposing player after the Boise State loss.
Now only if the college football experts can get off the Pete Carroll band wagon and give some love to the other Pac-10 teams.
Chump – Big Ten Officials
Apparently the Big Ten officials were tired of the major league baseball umpires getting all of the attention. During the third quarter of the Iowa – Indiana game on Halloween, the officials made the mother of all screw ups.
Indiana had just scored a touchdown that would have given them a bigger cushion going into the fourth quarter. Instead, the touchdown was over turned by the replay officials because they did not see the receiver’s foot dragging along the ground, despite the fact that it was obvious to everyone else.
While I know all officials are human and are prone to making mistakes, with all of the recent advances in technology you would think we would be able to eliminate bonehead mistakes like these. Especially when they come in situations where championships can be won or lost.
