NFL Week 8 – Gamers & Lamers
Published by JM Van Horn on November 3, 2009
As we reach the midway point of the NFL season, we find are beginning to find out which teams are pretenders, like the New York Jets, and which ones are true contenders, like the Minnesota Vikings.
In the coming months, which team will fold and who will ride a hot streak into the playoffs? While we wait, here are some of the gamers and lamers from Week 8 in the NFL.
Gamer – Brett Favre
Say what you want about Favre and how he handles his issues during the off season. During the Vikings seventh win of the season, Favre threw for 244 yards with 4 touchdowns. He has shown he can still prove to be a useful quarterback in the first half of the season. While his production has been solid in 2009, the real question is if he can continue this through the remainder of the season.
Lamer – Detroit Lions
While the Lions welcomed rookie quarterback Matt Stafford back to the lineup, fans found out they should have been more concerned with the absence of their Pro Bowl wide receiver Calvin Johnson. Without Johnson, the Lions were unable to push the deep ball and stretch the defense. As a result, the Rams were able to load up the box and shut down the run. For the sake of Lions’ fans, hopefully Johnson will be back sooner than later.
Gamer – LaDainian Tomlinson
Though he only gained 56 yards on 18 carries, Tomlinson did it against a solid run defense and was able to score twice when the Chargers needed it. Hopefully Tomlinson will be able to build off of this and continue his success for the remainder of the season.
Lamer – New York Jets
Apparently the Jets were able to game plan for the Wildcat offense since the Dolphins beat them a few weeks back. The problem now was they forgot how to play special teams. Ted Ginn twice returned kickoffs for touchdowns during the deciding third quarter which led Miami to victory.
Gamer – Matt Forte
Until this past weekend, Forte was in a major sophomore slump, only only rushing for more than 70 yards against the Detroit Lions. On Sunday, Forte doubled his rushing touchdowns for the year and racked up 121 yards from scrimmage. If the Bears are going to make a run at the wildcard, they will need this from Forte every week.
Lamer – Cleveland Browns Passing Offense
What can be said about the Browns at this point? The team’s woes on offense continue with another dreadful performance in the passing game. Anderson and Quinn combined for 7 of 20 completions for 74 yards with two interceptions. At some point this team is going to need to scrap their offensive scheme and try something else, because whatever they are doing is not working.
Statistic of the Week
The Miami Dolphins won their third game of the year while racking up a combination of 52 rushing yards with 52 passing yards. Meanwhile, the New York Jets racked up 378 total offensive yards.
