NFL Players Need to Shut Up and Play
Published by JM Van Horn on November 5, 2009
In case you missed it, several NFL players have been mouthing off in public this week and the time has come for them to shut up and play.
First we have Detroit Lions center Dominic Raiola who shot off at the mouth against Lions fans after the team lost to the St. Louis Rams this past Sunday. Raiola said he was coming to the aid of his rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford who was the target of their aggression.
Hey Raiola, Stafford was one of the reasons the Lions did not win the game. He completed 42% of his passes for 168 yards with 2 sacks and 1 interception.
Prior to the game, St. Louis allowed their opponents to score 28 points or more in five of seven games. The Lions were only able to muster 10 points in the losing effort.
Still Raiola felt the need to shout back to those coming down on his signal caller. Even the rookie Stafford knows not to go toe to toe with fans, downplaying the incident in the media.
Shouting back at Lions fans is nothing new for Raiola, who was fined $7,500 last year during the Minnesota game after he decided to flip off fans who were booing the team.
When the media spoke with Raiola after the incident, he only added fuel to the fire by saying he would give out his home address so anyone could go one on one with him.
Then there are players like Kansas City’s Larry Johnson who is on suspension for using a nasty gay slur twice within a twenty four period. On top of that, Johnson publicly questioned the ability of head coach Todd Haley on his Twitter account, comparing his qualifications with those of his dad’s.
Several thousand Chiefs’ fans are stepping up because they do not want Johnson to become the all-time leading rusher ahead of Priest Holmes. They have started this petition to present to general manager Scott Pioli with a request to release or deactivate him.

Dallas Cowboys WR Roy Williams
Whether this is successful or not, you have to give the Kansas City fans credit. They are putting their foot down against Johnson who has been nothing but a headache since being with the team.
The icing on the cake this week was when Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver Roy Williams made comments to the media how quarterback Tony Romo was throwing better passes to the rest of the team’s receivers. Williams, who claims to be Dallas’ number one receiver, has 14 receptions for 249 yards and two touchdowns this season.
Those aren’t exactly the kind of statistics you would expect from a number one receiver, especially one who is making over $9 million this season and a guy the Cowboys traded three draft picks for, including a first-rounder.
I am tired of the players bitching and whining how rough NFL fans can be on them or that they didn’t get the ball thrown to them the right way.
If these NFL players, all of which are making a hell of a lot more money than you or me would just play hard and keep their mouths shut, maybe things would resolve themselves on the field and make their lives a lot easier.
And a lot more quiet too.
