Moondog’s Champ & Chump of the Week – Eighteenth Edition
Published by JM Van Horn on November 9, 2009
As we present Moondog’s Champ & Chump of the Week – Eighteenth Edition, the baseball season is officially over and the start of the free agency period will begin.
In the NFL we will see the playoff races beginning to heat up while the BCS system will continue to be the starting point for heated discussions when it comes to the national championship.
While the New York Yankees could have earned this nomination for winning their 27th World Series, the U.S. Naval Academy one upped them by knocking Notre Dame down a peg with a 23-21 upset.
On Saturday, the Midshipmen took an early 14-0 lead and were able to fight off the Irish who made a second half attempt to earn the victory.
This was the second time Navy has beaten the Irish in the last three years. Though you have to go back over 70 years to find when an unranked Navy team beat a ranked Fighting Irish team.
Chump – Allen Iverson
When you talk about professional athletes who have lost all sense of reality, Allen Iverson is at the top of the list. Over the weekend, Iverson made the decision to request a leave of absence from the Memphis Grizzlies while he deals with a personal issue.
In other words, Iverson is upset that he’s coming off the bench and not in the starting lineup. This marks the second time in the past two years where Iverson was being asked to come off the bench.
Iverson needs to understand this isn’t going to change for the remainder of his career. He is a role player now and can a useful sixth man for most of the teams in the NBA. He is past his prime and is no longer the Answer to a team’s hopes for a title.
Some media outlets have been reporting Iverson may consider retirement, which would be the best option if he wants to salvage any part of his reputation.
