Fort Hood Murders Was An Act Of Cowardice, Terrorism

Last week’s tragic news of a deranged member of the U.S. Army killing his fellow soldiers at Fort Hood has many in the media discussing the reasons why this happened.

Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist stationed at the nation’s largest military installation, allegedly committed the worst mass shooting ever at an American military base, killing 13 and wounding 31.

Major Hasan was a practicing Muslim who had observed the religion since birth according to his cousin during a telephone interview on Thursday.

Major Hasan had received news he was about to be deployed to Afghanistan and sources close to him said he objected to going to battle against other Muslims.

As you might suspect, investigations into the incident are uncovering information about the alleged gunman.

The day after the shootings, a witness told investigators Hasan hollered “Allahu Akbar!” before embarking on his killing spree.

“Allahu Akbar” means “God is great” in Arabic.

On Monday, ABC News reported that Hasan had attempted to contact Al-Qaeda through associates at the mosque he attended. Also on Monday, a dancer working at one of the strip clubs near Fort Hood told Fox News that Hasan had frequented the establishment.

Aside from these revelations and additional information that is bound to be made public in the coming weeks regarding Major Hasan, there remains several questions why someone who chose to voluntarily join the U.S. military would commit such an act.

Monday was the 20-year anniversary marking the fall of the Berlin wall, essentially bringing an end to the Cold War. It also ended nearly 45 years of the U.S. military focusing its strategies on defending against or countering possible Soviet military action.

Shortly after that historic event in 1989, Sadam Hussein ordered an Iraqi invasion into neighboring Kuwait in 1990. During the next three months allied forces were deployed to the region as part of Operation Desert Shield.

Major Nidal Malik HasanFrom the moment Iraq invaded Kuwait, the U.S. was now primarily focused on the Middle East and the military shifted its combat readiness with an emphasis on responding to conflicts in the region.

With the United States support of Israel and the growing number of Islamic extremists engaging in acts of terrorism throughout the world, it wasn’t unreasonable to assume U.S. military intervention would be used to engage forces from Muslim countries well into the future.

Having joined the ROTC while attending Virginia Tech University, Hasan had to know of U.S. involvement in the Middle East.

Based on my service in the U.S. Navy, I have a good understanding of the amount of time it takes for an officer to achieve the next highest rank. Considering Hasan had achieved the rank of Major, he probably received his commission sometime in the mid 1990’s.

Upon receiving his commission as an officer, he took an oath like everyone serving in the military to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, both foreign and domestic.

Radical Islam was and remains to be a clear enemy of the United States and our allies.

As a life-long Muslim, Hasan had to be aware of the constant turmoil in the Middle East and particularly the fact an increasing number of terrorists acts were being committed by Muslim extremists.

Hasan was well into his military career when the terrorists acts of September 11, 2001, brought about a dramatic response from the U.S. towards radical Islam.

More importantly, anyone serving in our military should realize that at some point you could be ordered into combat and the possibility exists of being killed while performing your duties.

Regardless of religious beliefs or opposition to U.S. policies, every member of the U.S. Armed Forces understands – or at least they should understand – those are the realities of military service.

So for a little more than eight years, Major Hasan was aware of growing terrorists attacks and the commencement of U.S. military operations into Afghanistan and Iraq.

Those military engagements were focused against radical Muslims, and not once did Major Hasan attempt to espouse his religious beliefs in an effort to resign his commission and leave the U.S. Army.

It wasn’t until Major Hasan learned of his pending deployment to Afghanistan that he decided it was time to voice his opposition to U.S. policies.

Not only did he enjoy the benefits of military service for years as the U.S. and its allies engaged radical Muslims throughout the globe, Major Hasan did so while never being deployed outside of the United States.

When Hasan’s cousin called him “a good American” during last Thursday’s interview, he quite simply lied. Major Hasan isn’t a good American and he isn’t a good solider. He’s not even a good Muslim.

No, Major Hasan is only good at being a coward and a terrorist. He became one of the people he swore to protect and defend America against, and anyone believing otherwise is foolish.

As more news of Hasan’s past came to light on Monday, it’s clear government officials knew of his growing resentment towards the United States.

Moreover, reports suggest that while Major Hasan was becoming more vocal in his objections towards U.S. military involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, no one within the Army did anything to address it.

While the facts presented as evidence in Hasan’s trail may lead to more questions why he was allowed to remain in the U.S. Army, the one clear fact that can’t be disputed is his personal Jihad against his fellow soldiers.

Hasan ceased being “a good American” a long time ago. Now he’s nothing more than a murderer who, if found guilty, deserves to die.
