NFL Week 9 – Gamers and Lamers
Published by JM Van Horn on November 11, 2009
The past week in the NFL was full of offense, highlighted by 19 teams that scored at least 20 points against opposing defenses.
The Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints were able to continue their quest for the perfect season with hard fought wins while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were able to earn their first win of the season.
Here are the top Gamers and Lamers from the week 9 in the NFL.
Gamer – Cedric Benson
By the time the game was over on Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals swept the season series from the Baltimore Ravens thanks to 117 rushing yards from Cedric Benson. I have no idea the last time a running back was able to put up 100+ rushing yards twice in the same season against the Ravens defense. There is no doubt part of the success for the Bengals in 2009 has to do with Benson’s revival.
Lamer – New York Giants
After week 5, many of the NFL experts were saying the New York Giants were the class of the NFC and were one of the strongest teams in the NFL. Since then, they have lost four straight, including their most recent loss to the San Diego Chargers by one point. The reason for the losses: the Giants defense has become porous and they have had issues running the ball. If they do not fix things right away, they could miss out on the playoffs.
Gamer – Josh Freeman
If you did not know any better, you would have thought Josh Freeman had been leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers all season. Instead, he received his first start, which ended with him completing 14 of 31 passes for 221 yards with three touchdowns and 1 interception. He also helped the Bucs earn their first win of the 2009 NFL season. Not a bad way to start your career.
Lamer – Various Defensive Backs
Over the weekend, several defensive backs, including Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis and Kansas City Chiefs safety Mike Brown, were constantly beaten deep by their opposition. Wide receivers Randy Moss and Mike Sims-Walker ran wild this weekend like they were playing in a Madden game.
Gamer – Chris Johnson
The Tennessee Titans running back decided to follow up his standout week 8 performance with 135 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns against the San Francisco 49ers. It’s no surprise the Titans have won their last two games as Johnson ran for 363 yards and four touchdowns. I will be the first to admit I thought Johnson was going to fall into a sophomore slump and be a bust in 2009. So far he has been proving me wrong and does not look like he is going to slow down at all.

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers
Lamer – Green Bay Packers
It was bad enough for Green Bay to lose to the Minnesota Vikings during week 8, but their pick me up game against the Bucs was supposed to lift their spirits with an easy win. Instead quarterback Aaron Rodgers was sacked six times and threw three interceptions as the Packers gave the Bus their first win of their season.
Statistic of the Week
Prior to Sunday’s game, the Seattle Seahawks defense had three interceptions for the season. By the time it was done, their defense look liked the most dominant in the game and had hauled in five interceptions against the Lions.
