Bobby Bowden is owed the Chance to Decide His Coaching Future
Published by JM Van Horn on November 30, 2009
Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden has finished his 34th season and is toying with a .500 record for the season, which has not happened since 1976.
About halfway during the roller coaster season, some fans and alumni have been calling for Bowden’s head to be served on a platter. They have said the eighty-year old Bowden is past his prime and that the college games moves too fast fore him.
They say Bowden should be removed from his position and to let the heir apparent, Jimbo Fisher, take the role as head coach.
Those people need to quiet down and let the legendary head coach make up his own damm mind.
Bowden is the reason Florida State football is relevant. Without him, who knows where the program would be. There is no doubt the school would have seen the same success in the last thirty plus years. He is the reason why Florida State has won over 315 games during his time there.
The majority of the people talking about Bowden do not know much about the state of the program prior to the 1990’s. How they were wasting away as an independent and were the laughing stock in the South.
Yes they are going through hard times now but college football is cyclical.
Florida State will already be going through a major overhaul on the defensive side when Mickey Andres steps down after this season. The team would be even worse for wear if Bowden is forced out before the start of the 2010 season.
Take a look at the traditionally successful college programs throughout the country like USC, Michigan, or Notre Dame. Both teams have had their ups and down over the years for one reason or another.
In case you did not know. I am a proud member of the 1997 graduating class from Florida State. While this may bias my decision slightly, I can say without a doubt I would feel the same about this situation even if I did not graduate from FSU.
Why? Because I feel Penn State’s Joe Paterno, a head coach who I have grown tired of, should be afforded the same right to go out on his own terms. Both men should be allowed to coach the game until they have decided they are ready to give it up.
Yes, college football has become more of a business over the past decade, but part of what brings fans to the games is the rich tradition. Coaches like Bowden and Paterno are part of that tradition and should not be thrown away after a handful of less than stellar seasons.
By the end of the week, college football fans will know what Bowden’s plans on doing for the coming season. No matter what decision he makes, Florida State fans should stick by the man who brought their program to national prominence.
