The 2009-10 college football bowl season kicks off today with the New Mexico Bowl and the St. Petersburg Bowl.

The Fresno State Bulldogs of the Western Athletic Conference will face the Wyoming Cowboys of the Mountain West Conference.

The Bulldogs (8-4) got off to a 1-3 start this season, losing to Wisconsin in overtime, Fiesta Bowl-bound Boise State and Sugar Bowl-bound Cincinnati.

Fresno recovered nicely by winning seven of their last eight to secure the New Mexico Bowl invitation. The Bulldogs are led by running back Ryan Mathews, one of the best in college football.

Mathews rushed for 1664 yards on 245 carries and scored 17 touchdowns.

Wyoming (6-6) played one of the tougher schedules in the nation, losing to No. 2 Texas, No. 4 TCU, No. 14 BYU and No. 23 Utah.

The Cowboys are led by freshman quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels and wide receiver David Leonard.

Samuels completed 174 of 295 passes for 1752 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Leonard caught 70 of Samuel’s passes for 645 yards and one score.

The St. Petersburg Bowl features a battle of Knights, the Central Florida Knights of Conference USA and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights of the Big East.

Central Florida (8-4) lost to four bowl-bound teams this season, including No. 2 Texas and No. 9 Miami.

The Knights are led by running back Brynn Harvey and quarterback Brett Hodges. Harvey rushed for 1077 yards on 248 carries and scored 13 touchdowns. Hodges completed 184 of 301 passes for 2263 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Rutgers (8-4) got off to a rough start this season, losing to No. 3 Cincinnati 47-15. The Scarlet Knights also lost to No. 16 West Virginia and No. 17 Pittsburgh.
