Australian Doctor Says Santa Claus Is a Bad Role Model
Published by MoonDog on December 21, 2009
An Australian doctor has accused Santa Claus of being a bad role model because the physician says Saint Nick encourages obesity, drunk-driving and risk-taking.
Dr. Nathan Grills says Santa Claus is probably the most recognizable figure in the world which means that he is used to market everything from junk food to alcohol.
Grills say Santa Claus has been used before to market cigarettes and his physical appearance is hardly “a pin-up for public health.”
Grills admits that his article, which is to be published in a British medical journal, is “tongue in cheek.”
He says he does believe Santa Claus is a good role model in terms of gift giving and being generous but adds that, “if Santa is a figure that appeals to kids and he’s used by big corporations to market alcohol and the like, then basically he’s marketing those products to kids.”
