The global warming debate, like so many polarizing and politically driven issues in America, has led to arguments between those who believe that climate change poses a real danger and opponents who believe the data doesn’t substantiate their position.
Al Gore, author of An Inconvenient Truth and a former Senator from the state of Tennessee, has been the leading voice calling for global climate change legislation.
Gore, along with thousands of scientists and politicians from around the globe, have cited data reported by the Climatic Research Unit and the Climate Research Committee to support their belief that climate change legislation is needed to address what they feel is an eminent global environmental disaster. The CRU was at the center of a major controversy in November 2009 when thousands of e-mails and other documents were obtained through the hacking of a server at the University of East Anglia.
Gore, like most politicians, have trouble telling the truth whenever their lips move. He often misstates or outright fabricates data to support his position, and those of us that reside in the state of Tennessee know all too well of his propensity to lie.
But casting Gore aside for the moment, I decided to conduct my own research into this global warming thing.
I reside in Memphis, a city that according to Wiki has a “humid subtropical climate”. I can tell you from personal experience that Wiki’s information regarding the average yearly weather in Memphis is accurate.
Wiki goes on to describe the average winter in Memphis as “mild to chilly, with average January high and low temperatures of 49°F (9°C) and 31°F (-1°C). Snow occurs sporadically in winter, with an average yearly snowfall of 5.1 inches. Ice storms are a bigger danger, pulling tree limbs down on power lines.”
As seen in the graphic below, our local weather forecast calls for very cold temperatures over the next week, with snow accumulations possible on Thursday.

In fact, according to the National Weather Service, the Arctic air mass that’s moving into the area will potentially be the coldest since 2003.
In 1994, the city experienced the worst ice storm in its history and in 2004, another ice storm occurred just three days before Christmas.
In February 2009, Memphis received its heaviest single day snowfall in recent memory, with 8.9 inches accumulating in the section of the city I reside.
Memphis isn’t the only city in the world experiencing cold weather and snow.
On Monday, Seoul, South Korea had the heaviest snowfall in modern Korean history after a winter storm dumped more than 11 inches on the capitol.
Perhaps these recent cold weather events are an aberration. Then again, maybe they aren’t.
Maybe the cold weather we’ve experienced in Memphis over the past 15 years is the result of naturally occurring, cyclical events.
With the evidence supported by real weather facts, I’m having a hard time buying into this idea that global warming is taking place.
Moreover, I don’t believe the data Gore and scientists have cited is truthful. In fact, I believe they’re outright lies.
With regard to Gore, lying doesn’t come as a surprise. The man is a pathological liar.
But I expect more from a scientist, someone who is supposed to objectively report facts without skewing the data to further personal agendas.
With thousands of scientists around the globe altering or ignoring data to support their false claims of a pending climate disaster, I no longer believe anything they have to say on the subject.
Global warming? I don’t think so. That cold wind that’s blowing outside is the only thing I care about at the moment.
