The City of Irving and Kraft Foods announced a sponsorship deal in which a lucky contest winner will get the chance to blow up Texas Stadium.
The Irving city council approved the deal that as part of Kraft’s Cheddar Explosion promotional campaign. The person who wins a national essay contest will literally pull the trigger to implode the old home of the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys played their first game at the stadium with the hole in the roof in October 1971 and it remained the team’s home until 2008.
Texas Stadium was to have originally been a domed stadium, but the stadium could not support the weight of the entire roof, and public funding ran out before the roof support structure could be modified.
Former Cowboys’ linebacker D.D. Lewis said “Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch His favorite team play.”
