Despite Questions About Meyer, Gators Lead Recruiting Wars

The indefinite leave of absence Florida coach Urban Meyer is taking to address his health issues hasn’t put a dent in the Gators recruiting efforts.

The latest college football recruiting rankings show Florida leading the way after the Gators received commitments from three marquee prep prospects this past weekend.

Scout and Rivals each elevated Florida to No. 1 in their respective top 25 recruiting classes when defensive end Ronald Powell, safety Matt Elam and defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd all announced they would sign national letters of intent with the Gators.

Florida has received commitments from eight of Scout’s top 100 prep football players, including five five-star prospects.

The Gators have also gotten verbal commitments from wide receiver Chris Dunkley and running back Mack Brown, both of which are among the top 10 nationally at their respective positions.

A pair of Big 12 programs are second and third in Scout’s latest rankings. Oklahoma has received commitments from six of the top 100 prep prospects, three five-star recruits.

Leading the Sooners class is Blake Bell, the nation’s third-rated prep quarterback. Oklahoma has also received commitments from highly regarded linebacker Justin McCay and wide receiver Kenny Stills.NickSaban

Texas’ loss to Alabama in the BCS national championship hasn’t hurt the Longhorns recruiting efforts. Texas has verbal commitments from eight of Scout’s top 100 prep prospects, including five five-star players.

The Longhorns have attracted the best wide receiving class among all FBS programs. Darius White, Mike Davis and DeMarco Cobbs are among the top six wide prep wide receivers in the nation.

The newly crowned BCS champions are doing well in their recruiting efforts too. Alabama is fourth in Scout’s list with verbal commitments from four of the nation’s top 100 prep prospects.

The Crimson Tide have a commitment from Demarcus Milliner, the nation’s top-rated cornerback, and Keenan Allen, Scout’s fourth best safety.

Rounding out Scout’s top five college football recruiting classes is Penn State. The Nittany Lions have received verbal commitments from four of the nation’s top 100 prep prospects, including Paul Jones, the nation’s No. 2 quarterback.

Scout’s next five classes has a strong SEC presence, with LSU, Tennessee, Washington, Auburn and Georgia currently ranked 6-10.

Scout lists the SEC as the best at attracting the nation’s most talented prep football players, receiving commitments from 26 of the top 100.

Following the SEC is the Big 12 with 20 of Scout’s top 100 and the Pac-10 with 13.
