Shawne Williams, a former basketball player for the Memphis Tigers who later played in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, has been indicted in Memphis on drug charges.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office says Williams was one of 24 people who were indicted in the Memphis Police Department’s “Operation: Lockdown” investigation.
Authorities say the three-year NBA veteran was charged on four counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance With Intent to Manufacture / Deliver / Sell and four counts of Conspiracy to Manufacture / Deliver / Sell a Controlled Substance. Police say the drug in question was a codeine-based syrup.
Williams played for Memphis under then-coach John Calipari during the 2005-06 season where he averaged 13.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He opted to leave Memphis after his freshman year and entered the NBA Draft in 2006 where he was a first-round pick by the Indiana Pacers.
On October 10, 2008, Williams was traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Eddie Jones, two second round draft picks and cash.
On January 11, 2010, the Mavericks traded him and Kris Humphries to the New Jersey Nets for Eduardo Najera. The Nets then waived Williams on January 15 following the news of his indictment.
