Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll – simply known the world over as Shakira – one of the most popular singer-songwriters of all time, celebrates her 32nd birthday today.
Born in Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira met failure early after her first two albums were flops. Those failures led Shakira to assume control of her career, choosing to produce her own albums.
In 1995, she released Pies Descalzos. which brought her acclaim in Latin America. In 1998, her album Donde Estan los Ladrones was a critical success.
In 2001, Shakira release Laundry Service, an album that took her career to a new level by selling over thirteen million copies worldwide.
In 2005 she released two more albums, one of which contained the song “Hips Don’t Lie”, the highest-selling single in the 21st century.
Shakira has won two Grammy Awards, seven Latin Grammy Awards, and has been nominated for a Golden Globe award.
She’s sold over 50 million albums worldwide and is the only recording artist from South America to reach the top spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, the Australian ARIA chart, and the UK Singles Chart.
Aside from her incredible success in the music industry, Shakira is also among the more visually appealing women on the planet. In fact, as the photos in the gallery below will prove, she’s gotten even better looking as the year’s have passed.
