NOW’s Terry O’Neill Has Officially Lost Her Mind
Published by MoonDog on February 9, 2010
Terry O’Neill, president of the National Organization for Women (NOW), released a statement on Monday claiming the Tim Tebow Super Bowl XLIV commercial promotes domestic violence.
After several weeks of hand wringing over the possibility the ad would promote a “pro-life, anti-abortion” agenda featuring the Tebows’, the 30-second spot was mostly benign.
The advertisement begins with Pam Tebow talking about the uncertainty of her son Tim’s entry into the world.
The Heisman Trophy winner appears as a blur tackling his mother, sending both off-screen. She immediately bounces back up and scolds her son, saying, “Timmy! I’m trying to tell our story here!”
Despite its obvious attempt at humor, O’Neill said it glorified violence against women. “I am blown away at the celebration of the violence against women in it,” she said. “That’s what comes across to me even more strongly than the anti-abortion message.
I myself am a survivor of domestic violence, and I don’t find it charming. I think CBS should be ashamed of itself.”
The only thing O’Neill should be ashamed of is herself.
The group-think, elitism and condescension of NOW reveals exactly the point I made in an article addressing the Tebow ad prior to Super Bowl XLIV.
NOW isn’t an organization that promotes pro-choice so much as they are pro-abortion.
O’Neill failed to mention the “violence” found in the Snickers commercial featuring 88-year-old Betty White.
The ad shows White playing in a pickup football game where she’s tackled, ending up in muddy water.
At the very end of the 30-second spot, veteran actor Abe Vigoda, who turns 89 on February 21, is also tackled.
O’Neill has taken an organization that was once an advocate of women’s rights to becoming a reactionary wing of the political left, operating on the lunatic fringe of their prescribed ideology.
Women who made NOW a worthy organization and who fought for equality should be dismayed at the direction NOW has taken.
From the days of NOW members burning their bras in the streets to protest low wages, to having O’Neill claim a Super Bowl ad promoting the right to choose life symbolizes domestic violence is a leap that only a delusional person would make.
Perhaps NOW members should voice their displeasure with O’Neill’s leadership – or lack thereof – before she takes the organization into irrelevancy.
