Reese Witherspoon is one of my favorite actresses. An Academy Award winner, a Tennessee girl and a humanitarian to boot, Witherspoon celebrates her 34th birthday today.
Witherspoon was born in New Orleans but was raised in Nashville, Tennessee where she graduated from Harpeth Hall. She attended Stanford University for one year before leaving school to pursue an acting career.
Witherspoon had already gotten her feet wet as an actress long before she left Stanford. At the age of 14 in 1990, she landed the lead role in The Man in The Moon, earning critical acclaim for her performance.
In 1996, Witherspoon appeared in Freeway as Vanessa Lutz, a poor girl living in Los Angeles. She won the Best Actress Award at the Cognac Police Film Festival for her performance, establishing her as a serious actress.
In 1998 she had roles in Overnight Delivery, Pleasantville and Twilight. The following year Witherspoon appeared in two more major films, Cruel
Intentions and Election, the latter earning her a Golden Globe award nomination.
In 2000 Witherspoon earned her second Golden Globe nomination for Legally Blonde, a film that was a huge box office success.
In 2004 she made Just Like Heaven, a film which portrayed her as a young doctor who falls into a coma after a car accident. Later that year she began filming Walk The Line, a movie that she initially thought about quitting.
When she learned that she had to perform live in Walk The Line, Witherspoon was so worried that she asked her lawyer to terminate the film contract. Good thing she didn’t.
Her performance earned her the Golden Globe award, Screen Actors Guild award, the BAFTA and Academy Award for best actress in a lead role.
Witherspoon has risen to become an icon in American pop culture. Her ability to act in any role, her down to earth personality and stunning good looks make her one of the most bankable people in Hollywood.
