Anytime anyone mentions sharks I think of the movie “Jaws”. If someone were to mention shark infested waters, I’d think of the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.
If someone told me the state of Tennessee as a shark problem, I’d scoff at their feeble attempt at humor. But sharks are exactly what wildlife biologists found in the Tennessee River in March.
And to top it off, sharks weren’t the only exotic aquatic life they found – an octopus was also discovered.
The sharks, identified as black nose or fine tooth species, were found dead in the Tennessee River in the Decatur County area over a span of nine days in mid-March.
The octopus was found dead last week in Watts Bar Lake near Chattanooga.
Bobby Wilson, assistant chief of fisheries for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, says it was probably a hoax.
It is illegal to place any fish in public waters in Tennessee. The penalty is $50 plus court costs and up to 30 days in jail.
