Paul Cox, Former Collierville, Bishop Byrne Football Coach Dies

A Memphis area high school football coaching legend has died. Collierville High School football coach Paul Cox passed away early Sunday. He was 67.

Cox announced his retirement in October and stepped down at the end of the season after 34 years and 19 playoff appearances at Collierville.

At the time of his retirement, Cox was the sixth-winningest football coach in the state of Tennessee.

Cox coached at Bishop Byrne High School for five years before coming to Collierville in 1976.

Cox built Bishop Byrne into one of the Memphis area’s best football programs during the early and mid 70′s.

The Red Knights enjoyed some of the best years the football program has ever had during Cox’s tenure at the school.

Cox left Bishop Byrne before my freshman year at the school and I would have really liked an opportunity to play for him.

Public visitation will be Tuesday at Collierville First Baptist Church. The funeral for family and close friends will be Wednesday at St. Andrew Episcopal Church.

MoonDog Sports extends its deepest condolences to the Cox family.
