According to a report in the New York Times, the sports blog The Big Lead was purchased for an amount in the “low seven figures” by Chris Russo, chief executive of Fantasy Sports Ventures.
Jason McIntyre launched The Big Lead in 2006 when he was still an editor at US Weekly.
According to the report, McIntyre acknowledged that almost from the start, he hoped to be acquired. He recalled the 2007 purchase of mediabistro.com, a Web site for job seekers, for $23 million.
“I said, ‘Why not me?’ ” McIntyre said. “The low seven figures isn’t $23 million, but that kind of inspired me. Laurel Touby turned mediabistro into $23 million.
I won’t lie or sit here bragging, but yeah, I’m on the computer 14 to 15 hours a day. I have youthful energy. I made a bunch of sacrifices, and it’s paying off.”
I’m on the computer 14 to 15 hours a day too, like many site owners. Perhaps one day all of us who have invested so much time and energy can see a reward similar to McIntyre’s.
