Don’t Steal a Car From an SEC Cornerback

If you try to steal a car, don’t steal it from an SEC cornerback. It’s a lesson, Olive Branch Police say, Cody Cole learned the hard way.

Ole Miss Rebels cornerback Demareo Marr spends his fall Saturday’s chasing wide receivers on college football fields.

Cole had no idea who he was attempting to steal a car from. But Marr gave him an education in what its like to be a college football player.

“A cornerback has to run for a living,” Marr says, “and he didn’t have a chance when he ran. He wasn’t going to get away from me.”

Marr says, he ran into his house just before 3:00 p.m. on June 15, but he left his keys outside in his Dad’s Cadillac.

That’s when he says Cole passed by house and attempted to steal the car.

“I heard the car door slam,” Marr said, “When I looked out the window he was sitting in the car. I started yelling at him, he jumped out and started to run.”

But for a man who can run 40 yards in 4.4 seconds, Cole didn’t have much of a chance.

“He made it to the bottom of the hill before I had to drag him down because I had on flip flops, basically I was barefoot. If I had tennis shoes on he wouldn’t have made it that far,” says Marr.

Marr put his football skills to further use when he tackled Cole.

He caught Cole and began to hit him, “he was like, ‘man I’m homeless, I’m homeless.’ I said, ‘I was about to be carless. Because you were about to steal my car.’”

Marr now has swollen wrists and scraped knees, but his Dad’s Cadillac is still in the yard.

“He picked the wrong house,” says Marr, “I guess he didn’t know what kind of person he was dealing with, I was just trying to protect my property.”

Despite the attempt, Marr says he hopes the best for Cole and hopes this serves as a “wake-up call” to give him a second chance.

Cole has charged with felony attempted car theft and is being held on a $50,000 bond.
