Grizzlies Reach Deal With Rudy Gay, Fans Not Impressed

On Thursday, the Memphis Grizzlies announced they reached an agreement with restricted free agent Rudy Gay on a five-year, $82 million contract.

Gay’s contract will begin at an annual salary of $13.3 million based on projections for the NBAs new salary-cap figures.

While the NBAs free agent period began on July 1, teams and players can’t sign deals can’t until July 8.

Gay was scheduled to meet with the Minnesota Timberwolves Thursday afternoon, but canceled the trip after agreeing to the deal with Memphis.

The New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers were also said to be interested in Gay.

Gay averaged 19.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game in his fourth season with the Grizzlies.

While team officials were thrilled with the re-signing of Gay, Grizzlies’ fans weren’t as impressed.

In a poll conducted by The Commercial Appeal, 35% of those voting felt the Grizzlies spent too much money on a player who isn’t considered an NBA superstar.
