ESPN: The Worldwide Leader in Ass-Kissing

The buildup to Thursday night’s “decision” by Mr. Overrated – that would be LeBron James for those of you who don’t know he’s overrated – caused me to become more nauseated with each passing moment.

Being an old school guy, I thought about the greatest athletes of the past 50 years, and not one of them orchestrated a stunt like James did.

I can’t recall any athlete – especially one that hasn’t accomplished a damn thing – being so self-centered.

Sure, there have been plenty of athletes who have been selfish and egotistical, but even those that can be mentioned never took their self-promotion to this level.

Michael Jordan never did anything remotely similar to James’ nationally televised one-hour “special”, one that served no purpose other than to announce his intentions to play basketball for the Miami Heat.

The last time I checked, Jordan was the greatest basketball player of all-time, with multiple NBA championships and MVP awards to back it up.

James has, uh, wait it’ll come to me…Oh yea, that YouTube video that went viral. You know the one I’m referring to. The video where the college kid slams over his head.

Not much to hang your hat on, is it?

But really the blame for all of this can be placed squarely on the media, specifically ESPN, for allowing themselves to sink to an all-time low.

Here we have a kid who has done absolutely nothing of any value in his life, getting “The Worldwide Leader” to fill one hour of programming for what amounts to a particular day’s average sports news.

Do you think Albert Pujols will have a nationally televised one-hour special when he becomes a free agent?

It’s doubtful.

Not because ESPN wouldn’t whore themselves out like they did with James, but because Pujols has more class and wouldn’t put his personal interests ahead of the game or the fans.

Even more peculiar is the fact no one seems to realize that James is a Prima dona.

The Miami Heat obviously don’t know it, and neither does Chris Bosh or Dwyane Wade, his soon-to-be teammates in Miami.

Although no one seems to know it yet, a rude awakening is lurking.

When the 2010-11 NBA season tips off, Mr. Overrated and his every move will be covered by ESPN.

With Stuart Scott and Michael Wilbon standing close by pining for the moment that James will allow them a chance to take a whiff of his jock, a starry-eyed Scott will ask Wilbon if the Heat will win the NBA title.

Wilbon, fluttering with excitement, will most assuredly say yes. LeBron James is so good, not only does he get one-hour TV specials, he floats above the water, unlike Jesus who merely walked on it.

ESPN better hope the Miami Heat win the next NBA championship, because they’ve invested a lot of their dwindling credibility into James.

If the Heat don’t ascend to the promised land, The Worldwide Leader is going to get what they deserve – and so will LeBron James.
