Week two of the 2010 college football season went a long way in separating the teams who are real contenders for the BCS national championship.
Overrated
Virginia Tech – Losing on a neutral field against a really good Boise State team is nothing to be ashamed of, but losing at home against FCS opponent James Madison is an embarrassment.
Ohio State – The Buckeyes beat Miami (FL) at home, but if the Hurricanes don’t turn the ball over four times the outcome may have been different. Ohio State is solid but as of now isn’t BCS title material.
Georgia Tech – Losing to a Kansas team that a week earlier could only muster three points against North Dakota State doesn’t exactly place you among the college football elite.
Florida State – Some were questioning how good Oklahoma was last week after a closer than expected 31-24 over Utah State. On Saturday the Seminoles found out just how good the Sooners are.
BYU – Losing by three touchdowns to Air Force makes the Mountain West a two horse race between Utah and TCU. The Cougars defense was exposed against the Falcons.
West Virginia – The Mountaineers needed overtime to beat Marshall on Friday night. We’ll find out how good West Virginia is when they face LSU in Baton Rouge on September 25.
Underrated
Oklahoma – The Sooners dominated Florida State in a game that was over by halftime. A potential letdown game looms next week when Oklahoma faces Air Force.
South Carolina – We’ve seen this from the Gamecocks before, getting off to strong starts only to falter later in the season. But this South Carolina team is more physical and has an outstanding running back in Marcus Lattimore.
Michigan – In what may have been the best game in college football this week, Michigan overcame a three-point deficit in the final 3:41 to defeat Notre Dame.
Thus far, Wolverines QB Denard Robinson has been a one man wrecking machine, rushing for 455 yards and passing for 430 in Michigan’s two wins. If the sophomore keeps this up, he can say hello to the Heisman.
Stanford – I know beating the likes of Sacramento State and UCLA doesn’t seem all that impressive, but the Cardinal are strong on defense and have a solid running game.
