Major League Baseball’s average attendance dropped for the third straight season, falling 1 percent this year. The 30 teams combined to draw a total of 73.06 million fans, an average of 30,067.
Last year attendance for the 30 MLB clubs was 74.42 million, an average of 30,350 per game. That number represented a 6.7 percent decline from the 2008 season’s average of 32,527, when total attendance was 78.59 million.
MLB set attendance records in 2007, drawing a total of 79.5 million fans for an average of 32,785 per game.
The New York Yankees led all MLB clubs in attendance this season, drawing 3.765 million fans for its 81 games at Yankee Stadium. The Philadelphia Phillies were second in total home game attendance this season, drawing 3.647 million fans.
Rounding out the top five were the Los Angeles Dodgers with 3.562 million, the St. Louis Cardinals with 3.301 million and the Los Angeles Angels with 3.250 million.
Nine MLB clubs drew at least three million fans to their home games this season, matching the total from 2009.
