Let me get this straight. The Minnesota Vikings released Randy Moss on Monday because he was being Randy Moss, which is to say he was being his usual nutty self.
I get the fact Minnesota was in full damage control mode after Moss’ rambling press conference following the Vikings loss to the New England Patriots, but it wasn’t anything that the mercurial wide receiver hasn’t done before.
If ever there was an organization that knew exactly what it was getting when they traded for Moss, it was the Vikings. This is the guy that mooned fans at Lambeau Field, ultimately leading to his release from the Vikings during his first stint with the team.
Someone could have approached Moss after the presser and admonished him for his comments, but that should have been the extent of it.
Maybe coach Brad Childress felt that releasing Moss was in the best interest of the team, but it sure seems like a double standard when it appears Brett Favre could be in a lot more hot water than Moss ever has.
Favre could be found guilty of sending photos of his penis to former New York Jets hostess Jenn Sterger, an offense that would certainly warrant harsh punishment from the Vikings and the NFL.
All the bad publicity that Favre has brought upon the Vikings’ organization could easily be viewed as grounds for his release, yet he’ll be in the starting lineup when Minnesota plays Arizona on Sunday.
For all of Moss’ faults, he’s never been involved in anything that would remotely approach what Favre is being accused of.
Moss is guilty of being moody, aloof and kooky; everyone following the NFL knows that. But how many athletes in professional sports have those same personality flaws?
Moss’ shortcomings and his post game press conference comments didn’t warrant his release from the Vikings.
The fact he’s looking for employment while Favre remains with the organization sends a disturbing message to every player in the NFL.
If you speak badly about your organization or violate the league’s media relations policy, that will get you released. But allegedly sending photos of your penis or making overt sexual advances to employees…that won’t get you released.
Right, got it.
