After another embarrassing defeat on Sunday night, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that changes are imminent but made it clear he would not fire himself as general manager.
Jones said that people within the organization are going to suffer, implying that coaches and players alike are about to be shown the door.
But of all the people Jones should fire, he should be the first to go as the leader of the fiasco that has become the Dallas Cowboys.
Jones is beginning to sound like a politician that tries to spin landslide election results, claiming that the reason for his team’s demise is an inability to get his message across.
Everyone watching the Cowboys has heard the message loud and clear. It’s hard not to miss considering it’s the same failed message that’s been coming out of Jones’ mouth for 15 years.
About the only viable option Jones has is to hire himself as head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and superintendent of janitorial services because no one else is going to want this job.
What coach of any worth would want to put himself through the misery of dealing with a meddling, ego maniac like Jerry Jones?
A lot of Cowboy fans think Bill Cowher would be the perfect coach to get Dallas back on track, but does anyone honestly think he’d put up with Jones?
Jon Gruden is another name being mentioned as a possible replacement for Wade Phillips, but his fiery style wouldn’t be in harmony with a team whose roster is filled with a lot of overpaid, over-hyped, underachieving players who have no heart or respect for Cowboys fans.
As we’ve written time and again, the problem begins at the very top in Dallas.
But the guy at the top isn’t going to hold himself accountable despite the fact he’s going to hold everyone else in the organization accountable.
It’s a classic double standard that doesn’t give a potential coach a lot of confidence knowing that the owner isn’t going to accept responsibility if things go poorly.
Some would argue that the situation in Dallas couldn’t get any worse, but that’s a nearsighted view.
Things can definitely get a lot worse in Dallas because finding a coach that can actually have an impact is going to be next to impossible.
And with an owner that is so completely tone deaf and blind to reality, there’s no room for improvement.
There will however, be a lot of room in Cowboys Stadium in the form of empty seats. Plenty of parking will be available too.
To steal a line from the late Jimmy Durante, “what a revoltin’ development this is,” and nothing has become more revolting than Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys.
