Not One Team From The Big East in The Top 25 of The BCS

I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but the Big East Conference doesn’t have one team in the top 25 in the latest BCS rankings.

If ever there was a year when a team from an automatic qualifying BCS conference didn’t deserve to play in one of the BCS bowls, this is definitely the year.

The Pittsburgh Panthers currently lead the Big East standings with a 3-0 league mark and for now are in the driver’s seat to win the conference’s BCS bowl berth.

The Panthers have lost to Utah and Miami – two ranked opponents – but they’ve also lost to Notre Dame, and that doesn’t help their resume.

Considering the Big East doesn’t have one team in the AP or ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls, there isn’t much opportunity for Pittsburgh to rise in the BCS rankings even if they win their remaining games.

Pitt plays three of their final four games on the road, beginning this week when they face Connecticut on Thursday.

Following the Huskies is another road date against South Florida on November 20. Pittsburgh then faces West Virginia at home and will close out their season against Cincinnati on the road.

Every other team in the Big East has two losses in the conference, meaning Pittsburgh could lose several games and still win the BCS bowl berth.

When teams like Ohio State, Michigan State and Oklahoma State are likely to win more games than Pittsburgh this season, perhaps it’s time the automatic berth each of the six major BCS conferences receive should have some conditions.

One such condition should be that the champion of any BCS conference has to be ranked in the top 15 of the BCS in order to gain a berth.

Just because a team happens to win a weak conference doesn’t mean they deserve to play in a BCS bowl, and this year the Big East representative won’t be worthy.
