On Monday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones fired coach Wade Phillips and named offensive coordinator Jason Garrett as interim coach for the rest of the season.
Garrett was in the running to become the Cowboys head coach in 2007 before Jones hired Phillips to take over for Bill Parcells.
The fact Jones honestly believed Garrett was a possible candidate for the head coaching job explains everything we need to know why the Cowboys have failed so miserably this season.
Jones had no choice but to fire Phillips and didn’t have the option of hiring a real NFL head coach. Much to the chagrin of many Dallas fans, Garrett will take over a 1-7 team that many believed were Super Bowl contenders.
But if Jones thinks Garrett is going to somehow get the Cowboys to perform any better, then he’s going to be even more disappointed than he is now.
Jones is apparently oblivious to the fact that Garrett isn’t qualified to be an offensive coordinator, much less be a head coach in the NFL.
Granted, Dallas’ offensive line isn’t very good and the injury to Tony Romo didn’t help either, but the Cowboys offense has been underperforming since Tony Sparano left after the 2007 season.
The Dallas offense has digressed over the past three seasons under Garrett and has consistently been anemic in the red zone.
The Cowboys scored 455 points in 2007 when Sparano was helping Garrett with the offense.
In 2008, Dallas scored 362 points in Garrett’s first season as the lone offensive coordinator and in 2009 the Cowboys scored 361 points.
This season the Cowboys are on pace to score 322 points, their lowest output since 2004.
Despite having three solid running backs in Marion Barber, Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, Garrett has routinely abandoned the running game.
Through eight games this season the Cowboys have a total of 605 rushing yards – only the Denver Broncos have fewer rushing yards than Dallas.
When Jones said that people would suffer consequences following the debacle against Green Bay on Sunday night, he must not have included Garrett among those he intended to hold accountable.
If Jerry Jones is foolish enough to name Garrett the Cowboys coach following the season, then he will seal the fate of the organization for years to come.
