Ohio State coach Jim Tressel apologized to 400 Kool-Aid drinking Buckeyes’ fans at a luncheon on Monday, his first public appearance since he got caught lying.
According to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.com, Tressel told those in attendance that he couldn’t say much about the pending investigation into the Buckeyes’ football program.
Last week, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith suspended Tressel for two games and fined him $250,000 after a Yahoo! Sports investigation revealed he knew players were selling team memorabilia and apparel in April 2010, but didn’t tell anyone about it.
Tressel told the audience that, “I sincerely apologize for what we’ve been through.”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t that sound like Tressel avoiding responsibility?
Instead of apologizing for his actions, his choice of words suggest that he’s only sorry about getting caught and causing Ohio State a lot of embarrassment.
Smith’s feeble attempt to punish Tressel were met with criticism, with many calling for the NCAA to levy harsher penalties against the Buckeyes.
I suspect Tressel is going to have a lot more to apologize for in the not too distant future after the NCAA lowers the boom on Ohio State.
