Memphis in May organizers announced that due to the flooding at Tom Lee Park, the 2011 World Championship BBQ Contest will be relocated.
Organizers of the event said this year’s BBQ contest will be moved to Tiger Lane in the Memphis Fairgrounds and will be held on the same dates, May 12 – 14.
The Mississippi River stage in Memphis is currently at 43.4 feet and is expected to crest at 48 feet on May 10.
The expected crest is the highest recording since a record crest of 48.7 feet was reached on February 10, 1937.
The Fairgrounds does at least offer a concrete surface that will keep BBQ teams and visitors dry, but the location is perhaps the worst because of the nearly non-existent parking availability.
Memphis in May organizers had limited options and certainly did the best they could, but expect attendance at this year’s BBQ contest to be way down.
