You may have seen this from late last week about Ben Haas, an activist of sorts who tried to burn the U.S. flag on the campus of Louisiana State University.
Young Ben got permission to burn the flag as a protest in support of “student rights” and “terrorist rights,” with an emphasis on the latter because that’s what his attempted flag burning was all about.
When word spread that he was going to burn the U.S. flag, hundreds of students showed up to voice their objections. They literally encircled Haas and began to pelt him with water balloons before campus security got him out of there for his own safety.
I won’t debate the subject of terrorist rights because in my mind there is no debate, but I’m trying to figure out why Haas thought it would be a good idea to do this.
I’m willing to bet that he never attended an SEC football game at Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night. If he had, Haas would know that LSU fans can be particularly rowdy, and in some cases depending on the amount of beverages that have been consumed, they can get downright fanatic.
As it turns out, Haas was lucky the only thing he got pelted with was water balloons.
The moral of the story? You don’t want to attempt a flag burning in SEC country unless you are a glutton for punishment.
On Saturday’s during the fall, SEC fans gather in stadiums and voice their strong dislike for the opposition. We take our football very seriously in the SEC, and it’s honest to say that there’s a lot of animosity between many of the school’s in the league.
But when you try to burn the U.S. flag to protest terrorist rights, watch how fast SEC fans come together to support America for the right reasons.
Frankly, Ben Haas got what he deserved. He’s lucky the police escorted him away or those LSU students would have treated him like Nick Saban.
And for those of you that don’t know anything about Saban or SEC football, trust me, it would have gotten really ugly.
