The AutoZone Liberty Bowl received some good news on Wednesday when it was announced that the annual game will be televised by ABC instead of ESPN.
The game had been televised on ESPN for the past 20 years, but now an additional 16 million households will have a chance to see one of college football’s oldest bowl games.
Disney owns both ABC and ESPN, and this change puts the AutoZone Liberty Bowl back on ABC for the first time since 1980. The network had been the bowl’s TV partner in 1964 and again from 1966 until 1980.
The AutoZone Liberty Bowl will be one of just five bowls out of the 35 postseason games not televised by ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU. The others are the Rose and the Outback (both on ABC), Sun (CBS) and the Cotton (Fox).
This year’s AutoZone Liberty Bowl game is set for 2:30 p.m. central on Dec. 31, and the Liberty Bowl, pitting a team from the Southeastern Conference against the Conference USA champion.
