Man, I’m sure glad LeBron James and Terrelle Pryor saw fit to apologize to us mere mortals following their respective melt downs from last week.
In case you didn’t hear, King James’ first words out of his mouth at the post game presser after the Miami Heat lost to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday was one of the all-time great moments in sheer stupidity.
“All the people that was rooting on me to fail, at the end of the day they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they had before they woke up today,” James said. “They have the same personal problems they had today.”
Being that you and I are among those poor slobs James was referring to, it made me swell up on Tuesday when he apologized for those comments.
NOT.
Terrelle Pryor apologized on Tuesday as well, telling the media he was sorry for all the problems he created at Ohio State that resulted in Jim Tressel being forced to resign.
Sorry kid, but I’m not shedding any tears for you either.
The problem with James and Pryor is the same problem some of today’s athletes have. There are several self-absorbed athletes with a false sense of entitlement that believe the rest of us are on a planet that revolves around them.
And the problem has been created by parents, fans, coaches and boosters who continually tell these kids how great they are and how they can do no wrong.
Suddenly, an impressionable kid starts to believe what he’s being told, and the end result is a guy like LeBron James or Terrelle Pryor.
Unfortunately for King James and Pryor, there are people like me and Drew Magary (verbiage NSFW) who recognize what these athletes are all about.
And what they’re all about is nothing. Name one thing that James or Pryor have done in their lives that mattered.
Can’t name anything, can you?
All the athletic talent in the world doesn’t make you a champion, it doesn’t make you a winner and it doesn’t make you a better person than anyone else.
LeBron James said he was sorry for coming off like he was better than everyone else, but that apology is about three years too late.
Pryor said he didn’t intend to cause anyone harm, but as was the case with James, his apology is just as hollow.
When James and Pryor apologized for their recent actions, it didn’t make up for the years that both of them were being arrogant and selfish.
It’s because of their sustained arrogance and selfishness that led James and Pryor to become two of the more reviled athletes in America.
An apology for what happened yesterday doesn’t wash away their multiple shortcomings of the past, regardless of how both of them may view it.
LeBron James and Terrelle Pryor both need major reality checks, which isn’t going to be easy considering that neither of them reside in a world where they face reality like the rest of us.
In the real world, people go to work every day making chump change compared to what James makes, and he gets a three-month vacation on top of that.
In Pryor’s case, he got a free education, free meals, free books and free room and board. On top of that, he got to play football for one of the most storied programs in America.
All Pryor had to do was keep his nose clean and in a few short years he’d be a millionaire. Now that’s in serious jeopardy despite what his newly hired agent Drew Rosenhaus will tell you.
With so many Americans struggling right now, wondering whether they’ll keep a roof over their heads or if they’ll be able to feed their kids, those are realities that King James and Pryor know nothing about.
Both of them have been coddled so much that they have no concept of reality, and when they lose the big game or things don’t go their way, we see how they react.
Perhaps one day reality will make a grand entrance into the lives of LeBron James and Terrelle Pryor, and at that time maybe both of them will become better people.
I hope for their benefit that they do, because their apologies won’t amount to anything unless they recognize what they are – two giant assholes that need serious attitude adjustments.
