According to a police report, Robert Baker of Memphis, Tennessee is in jail after he faked a crime in order to have a place to sleep for the night.
Baker was arrested after police received a call about a break in. Officers in the area saw Baker and matched him to the description the caller gave of the suspect.
When police approached Baker, he told them he broke into the house and tried to steal a bike and air conditioner from it.
Police tried to call the homeowner by calling the number given to dispatchers, but Baker’s phone started ringing.
Police looked at Baker’s phone which had a call to 911 and two to the non-emergency number in its call log.
Baker then told police he called 911 because he didn’t have anywhere to go and wanted to go to jail to have somewhere to sleep.
Baker was taken to 201 Poplar and charged with making 911 calls in non-emergency situations.
An act of stupidity perhaps, but I actually feel sorry for this guy. I believe he acted out of desperation more than anything else. Maybe somebody will tell Baker there are other options available to him.
Unless Baker is a habitual offender, I doubt the judge will be too hard on him, or at least I hope not.
Considering it’s the middle of summer, if I didn’t have anywhere to sleep I might throw a rock through a window in hopes I’d get picked up.
Beats sleeping in a ditch and getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.
