Ukrainian women know how to protest, doing anything from throwing pastries at sexists to getting naked in order to disrupt public ceremonies.
In an effort to address the Ukraine’s growing prostitution industry, the feminist group FEMEN use every means possible to spread the message that “Ukraine is no whorehouse.”
Anna Hutsol founded and has been running FEMEN since 2008. She says the government is doing nothing to stop prostitution in the Ukraine.
Hutsol says the combination of a higher cost of living and a male dominated society has led more women to work as prostitutes.
In fact, some suggest that Ukraine’s sex tourism industry is quickly becoming the largest in Europe. Officially there are 12,000 prostitutes in the Ukraine, but there are many more in reality.
While prostitution is supposed to be illegal, Hutsol says the government doesn’t want to deal with the issue.
“The fine for getting paid for sex is around five euros” ($7.08), says Hutsol. “And for pimping, you face a jail sentence of three to eight years. But in practice the pimps don’t go to jail because they bribe the police.”
As you’ll see in the video, Hutsol and her group will resort to any tactic they believe will promote their cause. And by anything, we mean that literally.
