Thanks For Losing The Game Tony Romo

In my 2011 NFL predictions from last week, I wrote that the Dallas Cowboys wouldn’t make the playoffs this season because Tony Romo is still prone to do stupid things.

After Romo fumbled near the goal line and threw a late interception against the New York Jets that led to a Nick Folk game winning field goal, I’m looking like an oracle today.

Despite having starting corner Terence Newman out with a groin injury and losing replacement corner Orlando Scandrick during the game with a sprained ankle, the Cowboys defense more than did their job.

Dallas held the Jets to only 45 yards rushing, sacked Mark Sanchez four times and forced two turnovers – an effort that should have resulted in a Cowboys’ victory.

But New York scored 17 points off Cowboys’ mistakes, including Romo’s two turnovers and a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown.

The Cowboys had the game all but wrapped up with just under 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter when Dallas had the ball at the Jets’ 3, but on third down Romo made a dash for the end zone and laid the ball on the ground.

Romo’s mistakes were more of the same from a quarterback who has shown a propensity throughout his brief career to be incapable of winning the big game for Dallas.

During the post game press conference, Romo pinned the Cowboys loss on himself.

“We win that football game if I don’t do what I did. It’s hard to swallow. We lost this game because of me,” Romo said.

Yeah, we know you lost the game for Dallas Tony. And yes, it is hard to swallow. But it really shouldn’t come as a surprise to Cowboys’ fans who have watched you muck it up for the past six years.

Anyone that’s followed the Cowboys over the recent past already knows that the reason Dallas loses games like this usually is because Romo made mistakes.

It’s become an all too familiar scene in Dallas. For a team with a respectable amount of talent on the roster, they continue to underachieve. And the biggest underachiever of all is Romo.

It tends to make you wonder if the day will ever come when Romo performs up to the level expected of him. Considering the evidence, I wouldn’t count on it.
