Vols Tyler Bray Putting Up Heisman Worthy Numbers

Tennessee’s Tyler Bray isn’t considered to be a front runner to win this season’s Heisman Trophy award, but the Vols QB’s numbers are worthy of consideration.

Two games into the 2011 college football season, Bray has generated passing statistics that are better than some of this year’s Heisman favorites, including Stanford’s Andrew Luck.

In the Volunteers’ wins over Montana and Cincinnati, Bray has completed 51 of 65 passes for 698 yards and seven touchdowns.

The seven TD’s ties him for most in the nation with six other quarterbacks, including Houston’s Case Keenum and Oregon’s Daron Thomas, both of which are considered to be Heisman candidates.

More impressively, Bray has yet to throw an interception and he’s 4th among all Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks in passing yards, 6th in completion percentage and 7th in yards per attempt.

With Tennessee not ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams, Bray hasn’t gotten the attention other quarterbacks around the country have received.

But on Saturday when the Vols play 16th ranked Florida, Bray will get a chance to put his skills on display against a Gators team that is 6th in the nation in total defense.

If Bray can lead the Vols’ offense as he’s done in their first two games against a stingy defense in a hostile environment, he might begin receiving some recognition.

Chances are though that Bray won’t get any serious consideration from Heisman voters this season because he’s only a sophomore and the Vols aren’t among the teams that will likely play in a BCS bowl.

But Bray has clearly established himself as one of college football’s better quarterbacks. Despite his youth and the lack of attention he’s getting, it’s just a matter of time before Bray is on the minds of Heisman voters.
